Jeanine Krause of JK Studio & Reed Making fashioned this oboe reed for agility and intense musical expression. It is suitable for performing works from many different Baroque composers’ styles including J.S. Bach, Couperin Telemann, Vivaldi, Hotteterre, Handel, Purcell and even Zelenka and C.P. E. Bach. Hand-Shaped and hand-finished, this reed has a stable yet flexible feel because it is fully played-in and thoroughly tuned with pure intervals using a reference of A = 415 Hz in all keys up to three flats and three sharps. Special care is taken with half-hole and forked-fingered notes to enable balanced sound quality. After a reawakening period (please allow up to three normal soakings) and careful adjustment of the desired tension and internal volume (press open or pinch closed the soaked reed between the thumbs and index fingers), the reed should require at most only the slightest bit of personalization. This reed works well with Stanesby, Stanesby Jr. and Bradbury copies. With a Saxon, Eichentopf and Sattler models, consider narrowing the sides slightly. Please note, reed wells vary widely from oboe to oboe even from the same oboe maker. You will need to adjust the fit and appropriate intonation for your oboe by adding or removing waxed cotton thread at the base of the staple.
Please note, changes in altitude and humidity will influence the reed so you may need to make some minor adjustments to get your desired “feel” for playing. I recommend using your fingers (and not your embouchure) to train the reed to have the proper opening and internal volume. Once you have done this, if the reed is too easy blowing, clip the tip very slightly to build in the desired resistance. If the reed is too hard, dust the tip area on both blades. If it is still too hard, dust the back of the reed on both blades as well.
